ECU programming means updating or modifying the control system's software with new values. The control unit is like the car's "computer", which collects sensor data and controls engine operation. With programming, these settings can be changed, for example, to achieve better performance, lower consumption or smoother engine start. The most well-known form is performance optimization or engine "chipping" – modifying the engine control unit's program to improve power and fuel economy.

ECU programming may also be necessary in maintenance situations. After installing a new control unit, it often needs to be programmed to fit the car, and installing timely software updates from manufacturers usually requires programming. Additionally, after fault diagnostics, software updates or calibration are often needed.

In Audi and other VW Group cars there are several control units that can be programmed or coded. The most common programmable units are:

• Engine control unit (ECU): Controls fuel injection, ignition, turbo operation etc. (the engine's "brain").

• Transmission control unit (DSG/S-tronic): Controls automatic transmission shifting. DSG/S-tronic transmissions can be programmed to achieve better shifts or enhanced acceleration.

• ABS/ESC control unit: Anti-lock brake and stability control system management.

• HVAC control unit: Regulates air conditioning sensors and actuators.

• Lighting control unit: Headlight, fog light and interior lighting settings.

• Instrument cluster and communication units: Instrument panel display and car communication system settings.

The following symptoms may indicate that control unit programming or calibration is needed:

• Warning lights are on: For example, the engine warning light (Check Engine) or ABS/ESC warning light comes on the dashboard. A serious control system malfunction can put the system into fault mode and light the warning light.

• Transmission jerking or delay: When starting off, the transmission jerks or slips, or there is delay in shifting. This is a typical sign of a faulty DSG/S-tronic control unit.

• Sluggish throttle response or stiff driving: The engine does not respond as desired to the throttle pedal, or driving becomes awkward. This may be due to incorrect engine control unit adjustment map or sensor errors.

• Electronics failures: For example, air conditioning malfunctions, lighting system errors or unusual instrument panel readings.
